Honesty is the best policy

If you need tough love, I will give it to you. I am not helping you by lying to you or sugarcoating things. I will not be rude, but I will be honest. Life is too complicated to add deceit in the mix. Trust is earned, and if you lie to me then I cannot trust you.

So many people ask me about relationship advice. 9 times out of 10, their problems can be solved with communication, and by that I mean open communication which includes being honest. Just because you've done something or said something hurtful does not mean that the other person will not forgive you, but just because they forgive does not mean they'll forget.

I really can't stand it when a person keeps taking a boyfriend/girlfriend back time and time again, when they do the same thing over and over and over. Really?! And you wonder why you are miserable? Don't get me wrong I believe in second chances under certain circumstances but that person has to PROVE that they are willing to seriously work at changing and making things right. YES, THEY HAVE TO PROVE IT. They are the ones that did something wrong, not me.

I know many people in violent relationship, women married to alcoholics, men and women whose spouses are unfaithful, and they keep falling back into those same patterns. BUT, most of them knew that the person was like that BEFORE they entered into the relationship. SORRY, but you aren't going to magically change someone overnight.

Use your head & your heart. Everyone deserves love but relationships are not romance novels or Disney movies, they take work, sacrifice, honesty, and compromise.

State of the Union

I have always loved reading, maybe it stems from my grandfather reading the newspaper to me every day since before I could walk or talk, but children need exposure to literature and reading at a young age. In today's world we are too busy with work and other mundane tasks that we forget how important a little "quality time" is with our children. No, I do not define quality time as sitting in front of the TV watching "Lost" or whatever show is on at 7:00 that night.

I admit, being a product of Generation X that technology has tainted my ability to spell :( Yes, I'm a spell check junkie, but at least I can form a cohesive and coherent sentence. There is a problem when slang and "e-speak" is taking over our society's ability to seek a higher level of understanding basic principles of language.

If I hear one more person say "I be going" or see one more teenager graduate high school without being able to read on a 3rd grade level, I think my head will explode. It is our job as teachers, as parents, as concerned family members to help. Take the drugs and guns away and replace them with pens, paper, and books. Learn how to read, not how to kill. Is there any hope for our future?

Merry Christmas

Yes, I did say Merry Christmas - I saw on the news this morning that a boy was suspended for drawing a picture of Jesus at school. The assignement was to draw a picture related to CHRISTMAS!

I'm not one to preach believe me, because I don't want someone else telling me what to think or beleive! But seriously, things are getting ridiculous especially when everyone is trying so hard to be politically correct. My thoughts are - don't take things so seriously. If you aren't in imminent harm, GET OVER IT. Let people say Merry Christmas or pray in schools or whatever they want to do. If you don't agree, turn the other cheek, bow your head and recite a poem, or say Happy Hannukah instead. Whatever you want to do - it's called FREEDOM. Last time I checked that's why our soldiers our overseas dying - so we can CHOOSE how to express our beliefs.

I grew up saying the pledge of allegiance in school and having a "moment of silence". I never put much meaning into it, but now that I'm older I see that there is a significance to starting the day off being thankful - thankful to have a safe school, thankful for a good education, thankful that you have a way to school in the morning.

There is a definite breakdown in youth today, riddled with violence and poverty. I'm absolutely not saying that prayer and patriotism will fix these problems, but the youth today need something to believe in, something to look forward to, they need hope.

Hug your family, tell someone you love them, and be happy that you have something good in your life.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Follow the Leader

I'm always conflicted when I think about watching the nightly news. It seems like for every good story there are 5 bad ones to follow. It is so horrible to turn on the news and see how an innocent boy in Chicago was killed by a group of gang members, or how a California girl was gang raped in front of a group of people! How can this happen???

Do you think that bystanders should be held accountable for witnessing a crime and not reporting it?

Spare the Rod...

When I was young my brother and I both were spanked. Now that I have a son, I have chosen not to spank my children. Many parents feel that since they were spanked when they were growing up that it is a necessary part of discipline, what are your thoughts?

Do you think parents should spank their children? Why or Why not?

G.I. Jane

In lieu of the recent happenings at Ft. Hood I would like to post our first discussion topic. Should the Department of Defense allow women to fight in combat? Why or Why not?

Giving to Charity for FREE!

Hi everyone,

As the holidays are approaching, I know lots of you buy gifts online. Well, there is a way to donate to your favorite charity without spending any money. You can go to www.goodsearch.com which is a search engine much like Google, and each time you do a search the site donates to your charity of choice. Also, if you do shop online they have a partner site called www.goodshop.com which will donate a percentage of your purchases to the charity as well. There are over 1,000 online stores to choose from including Target, Walmart, Kohls, Best Buy, and others. Most of these stores offer coupons as well! So you get to save money and donate to charity (including several in AL)! I love it because it’s 100% effortless, just set goodsearch as your homepage and search away like you usually would.

Happy Holidays!

New Blog up for disucssion :)

Stirring the Pot

So, you may have noticed that I posted a status of "Vaccines do not cause Autism" on my Facebook. I didn't think it would really ruffle that many feathers but apparently it did. I would like to use my blog to discuss other various topics of interest, broaden my horizons, and get the intellectual juices flowing. In today's world we are so caught up in the ends and outs of work and television no one has good 'ol fashion "discussions" anymore. So if you have friends or know people that would appreciate discussing various topics share my blog spot with them. The blog is www.mrsmgoodwin.blogspot.com please join in on the conversation.  Just remember everyone is entitled to their opinion :) Be respectful.

I would like to pose a new question or topic every week or so for discussion/debate. If you have any issues that you would like to see discussed please email them to me. Happy Debating.

Thanks!
